I feel like many people have this idea in their head that the price of a gift is the measure of the value you place on your relationship with somebody, but as the saying goes it really is ‘the thought that counts’. Sometimes the best gifts are ones that didn’t cost you anything but time.
About four years ago at the One Of A Kind Craft Show in Toronto, I bought this little book from a vendor named Margi Laurin who took vintage textbooks, comics, children’s books etc., took out the spine and added blank pages in between and then rebound them with the spiral binding. I took this book home and since that very day I’ve been gluing, taping and sticking in different memories and tokens from experiences including trips, very thoughtful cards, my proposal – so many different memorable things! A friend of mine really liked the idea so I picked her up one this christmas and she was elated to receive it! You can make one of these for yourself too! You could glue white paper to some of the pages or start it off my picking up a used book from a thrift store and printing out pictures, posters, and quotes that relate to them and sticking them into the pages! Let them know that it’s a photo journal or a memory book for them to document the amazing things they experience! It’s affordable but also has a lot of sentimental value – especially if the cover of the book is something that relates to them!
What You Mean To Me Box
I once decided to make a friend a box with little pieces of folded paper in it. On each of the little pieces of paper I wrote down different memories I had with them or things they did for me that really made an impact on my life! Things as simple as telling me I looked beautiful after a long day or spending a whole weekend with me after something sad happening. Telling people how much they mean to you not only shows someone their impact on your life but also shows that they are so important to your life that you have countless fond memories with them! It’ll warm your heart writing the pieces of paper, and warm theirs as they read it!
Experiences – experiences with the person you care about is always a good idea! I could be a dinner, a trip to an outdoor skating rink, a walk through a conservation area, our a road trip to a christmas village; not only can you save money if you wish by packing your own food for many outings, but you also get a day dedicated to just you and your friend/family member/significant other which is the most valuable thing during christmas time! There’s this place in Norfolk County(Simcoe) that decks out the entire downtown with lights!! So from 5:30 – 11 you can see a winter wonderland of christmas lights – it’s little things like this that cost very little to do but leave a lasting impression with an amazing memory to hold on to!
I do not care how cheesy or cliché this is but if I got a mixed cd from somebody and I would be ecstatic!! I just recently made one for one of my closest friends as a christmas present and it has a whole bunch of her favourite songs on it so she can play it in her car! Current favourite songs to songs we listened to in high-school – I made sure to have a nice variety. Something like this is a display of how well you know the person whether you are putting their favourite songs or a selection of songs you know they will like!
What do you think? What are some christmas gifts you’ll be giving this year?
